Congratulations to Evan MacKenzie, Assoc. AIA, a member of Glavé & Holmes’ Urban Architecture Studio, on being part of the prestigious 2014 Virginia Society AIA Emerging Leaders in Architecture (ELA) program.

Evan is one of 16 individuals to make up to 2014 class of Emerging Leaders, selected based on their potential to be outstanding contributors to the profession and the community. The goal of ELA is to help emerging architects learn and grow by providing tools and experiences to support their careers and future endeavors as leaders and community members. It is an intensive program of educational sessions structured around presentations, discussions, team exploration, analysis, consensus-building, collaboration, and case study activities undertaken over the course of a year. The 2014 class project is sited in historic Falls Church, where history and growth have collided to make planning and development an interesting challenge. Evan and the other participants have taken on the challenge to create a cohesive identity for the downtown community.

Glavé & Holmes has greatly benefited from Evan’s involvement with ELA, and our team is excited to learn more from his experience. G&HA has had five other members of the firm complete the program in previous years, including Rachel Shelton , Jaclyn Miller, Jennifer Rhoades, Jennifer Wimmer, and Melissa Vaughn. For more information about the Emerging Leaders in Architecture program and to see the rest of the profiles, visit ELA’s website.

Glavé & Holmes ArchitectureAnnounces New Promotions

RICHMOND, VA (April 26, 2013) – Glavé & Holmes Architecture (G&HA) is pleased to announce the promotions of S. Jeanne LeFever, AIA, to partner and of Andrew B. Moore, AIA, LEED AP, to principal.

LeFever manages human resources, business and financial operations of Glavé & Holmes. She began a successful career with the firm 17 years ago as a project manager. She has contributed to many noteworthy projects including the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens Education Building, the five-star Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, and the Darden School of Business and Sponsor’s Hall Addition at the University of Virginia. LeFever has 25 total years of experience in the industry, and currently serves as President of AIA Richmond.

Moore joined Glavé & Holmes in 2004 as a project manager and now directs the Urban Architecture Studio. With 19 years of comprehensive experience in a variety of project types, Moore and his studio focus on the renewal of civic places through the rehabilitation of existing structures and the creation of new structures that converse with the surrounding built environment. While at Glavé & Holmes, Moore has applied his principle of “civitas” to projects of all scales, from a 78,000-square-foot court facility for the City of Fredericksburg, to the adaptive reuse of a modest urban row building into a cutting-edge recording studio, to the integration of a new 500-bed student residence hall into an existing university campus. He is President of the Partnership for Smarter Growth, serves on the Board of Directors for the Storefront for Community Design, and is active in the Urban Land Institute, as well as the Virginia Downtown Development Association.

≈ Comments Off on The Virginia Tech Visitors & Undergraduate Admissions Center is now LEED Certified

The Virginia Tech Visitors & Undergraduate Admissions Center has been awarded LEED® Certification, established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

As the gateway to the campus, the new 21,690 square foot Visitors & Undergraduate Admissions Center is a “signature building” for Virginia Tech. The architecture of the Visitors & Undergraduate Admissions Center combines elements of the traditional Collegiate Gothic with more contemporary interpretations, which integrates the building with the core campus. The Visitors Center presents an exhilarating view from an airy reception space through large glazed openings in a setting that is welcoming and accessible to the user.

The Center is a two-story building, clad in Hokie Stone, that includes a visitor reception area, exhibit gallery, assembly hall, conference rooms, and staff offices.

≈ Comments Off on Jennifer Wimmer named Chair of the Commission of Architectural Review

Urban Architecture Studio member Jennifer Wimmer has been named Chair of the Commission of Architectural Review. This is a fantastic appointment, and we wish Jennifer great success.

The Richmond Commission of Architectural Review (CAR) was established by City Council in 1957. The CAR is the city’s official historic preservation body and is charged with reviewing all exterior changes to structures within the city’s Old and Historic Districts and issuing Certificates of Appropriateness for those projects that it deems to be appropriate.

When a neighborhood organization or other applicable entity submits a nomination request, the CAR oversees the process for designation of Old and Historic Districts and makes a final recommendation for designation to City Council.

The CAR also assists and advises City Council, all city boards and departments, and property owners in matters involving historic resources relating to appropriate land use, zoning, and other issues.

Glave & Holmes Receives AIA Richmond Honor Award for Design Excellence

16 Monday Apr 2012

Posted by Glave & Holmes | News and Press in News, Urban Architecture

≈ Comments Off on Glave & Holmes Receives AIA Richmond Honor Award for Design Excellence

Glavé & Holmes Architecture received an Honor Award for Design Excellence from the Richmond Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for the Charles Luck Stone Center.

In 2004, Luck Stone launched an initiative to rebrand its Architectural Stone Division with the intent of establishing a high-end retail experience for customers. As part of that effort, Luck Stone engaged a consultant team to create an appropriate physical space to sell stone products in a design-oriented environment. The new name for the division is Charles Luck Stone Center.

The center serves as the platform for an immersive customer experience in the Studio, providing inspiration through the use of stone for homeowners, designers and contractors. The interior of the building, designed in collaboration with Fraser Design Associates, is adorned throughout with innovative applications of stone. The surrounding site, designed in collaboration with Nelson Byrd Woltz, includes numerous examples of exterior stone applications, completing the total visitor experience.
