Our Principal & Director of the Interior Design Studio, Jessica Ritter, recently wrote a column for Hotel Business magazine that has been published! Here is the link to the article. Jessica discusses the transformation of spaces into revenue generators, including our recent work at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort.

The editor enjoyed the column so much that he also posted the article on Inspire Design, a sister Hotel Business publication focusing on design news and trends in the hospitality sector. Congrats Jessica!

Hotel & Home Spotlight: A Room By Any Other Name…

You may know it as the bathroom, restroom, water closet, WC, lu, or privy… but no matter what you call it, we all need one from time to time! While the bathroom/restroom may be one of the most functional and potentially utilitarian rooms in your residential or commercial space, that doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful too.

Since moving indoors, there have been many advances in plumbing, and there are a variety of design opportunities to create character defining details and spaces of repose.

Let’s take a look at flooring. Use of large tiles can be problematic when it comes to sloping-to-drain. Consider installing a trench drain at one end with a decorative grate. This is especially useful for commercial projects that are subject to frequent and heavy cleaning.

Walls present a variety of options including painted gypsum board, stained or painted wood wainscot, or decorative tile and accents. When niches are provided in shower walls, additional storage can be added.

Toilet partitions are another opportunity to provide character. If the budget allows, consider wood or stone partitions rather than phenolic. A row of toilet stalls can be enhanced with a bit of decorative trim work as well.

Consider a statement piece such as a large mirror with decorative trim or a beautiful stand-alone mirror.

The vanity area is yet another focal point where there is an opportunity to create beauty with function. Consider a metal sink rather than the traditional porcelain and add a matching faucet…

The same idea can be applied in a commercial setting as well, where a built-in vanity can appear to be a piece of furniture.

Attention to detail can turn a utilitarian space into a memorable one, and maybe even one in which you choose to linger, spend some quiet time, or simply take in the view. There is opportunity for design in every living space.

Hotel & Home Spotlight: Look Up! Ceilings As An Integral Design Element

Ceilings, Hotel & Home Studio

Ceilings tend to be forgotten spaces, ending up as bland, boring and blasé. They are often considered only as functional elements for lighting, vents, or ducts, leaving the space cluttered and unattractive. When time is spent integrating ceilings into a design, the ceiling can be beautiful, interesting, and make a space feel truly complete.

The treatment of a ceiling can help define a large space such as the lobby of the 1901 Carolina Hotel at Pinehurst Resort, North Carolina…

Glave & Holmes-Look Up-Lobby

…or help give an impression of separate spaces as in these floating panels above each massage table at the Colonial Williamsburg Spa.

Glave&Holmes-Look Up-Williamsburg Spa

A ceiling can be highly decorative, or just add a single focal point as in this residential porch where geometric shapes celebrate the artistry of plaster.

Glave&Holmes-Look Up-Residence Stairwell

Glave&Holmes-LookUp-ResidenceDining

Ceilings can also help confirm the tone of a room. A heavy crown molding treatment can help a space feel warmer and more intimate, which can be ideal for a small sitting area…

Glave&Holmes-LookUp-ResidenceSeatingArea

…or a neutral colored wood treatment can add interest and allow the ceiling to create a quiet, friendly space that still feels light and airy.

Glave&Holmes-LookUp-SunRoom

Sometimes it is necessary for a ceiling to have many ducts and vents crisscrossing the space. One way to take the attention away from these functional items is to create a floating panel or cloud and allow the other items to fade into the background, as designed for this ballroom space at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.

The Hotel and Home studio at Glavé & Holmes Architecture invites you to “look up!”…and let us know what you find. What are some of your favorite ceiling treatments?

Our Vision: Creating a Sanctuary

16 Tuesday Sep 2014

≈ Comments Off on Our Vision: Creating a Sanctuary

The Vision

The Vision

Glavé & Holmes Architecture is excited to be part of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League’s Designer House. Our Hotel & Home Studio was chosen to design the Master Bedroom at the Hampton Manor house in the Hallsley community. The Master Bedroom is a place to rest and rejuvenate, to nurture one’s spirit and relax with children and pets. It is luxurious yet casual, traditional yet youthful and modern. It lifts the spirit and pampers the body. The room is truly what all bedrooms should be – a place to recompose and repair, and to reflect and delight in the romance and possibility of life.

The Realization

The Realization

Sanctuary – The master bedroom is a “Sanctuary” from the world. It is tranquil, relaxed, and intended to help the owners recharge and prepare for another day.

Nature Inspired – Nature provided the inspiration for the room from the Robin’s Egg blue walls (Benjamin Moore “Skyscraper” 765) to the window treatments that feature birds, flowers, and trees. This connection is enhanced by flowers and plants throughout the space and by the extraordinary pressed botanicals from local artist, Anne Blackwell.

Timeless Elegance – Nothing about this room is trendy. We believe it reflects a graceful lifestyle that is cozy, comfortable, and elegant but not formal.

Fresh and Youthful – This is a fresh version of traditional design. The updated color palette of grays, blues, and greens; the modern art; and the sumptuous mixture of textures make this space appealing to all generations.

Crafted with Pride – The room is filled with carefully crafted objects from the hand-knotted Tibetan rug to the fine furniture of Kindel, Moore Councill, McKinnon & Harris, and Niermann Weeks. It includes fine linens from Europe, Murano glass vases and lamps, and a breakfast table and dressing table made locally in Richmond.

The house will be open to the public from September 15 to October 13, 2014 and our design team, including Gary Inman and Catherine Stanley, will be available to answer any questions. Be sure to follow us for a few more sneak peeks of the room! For more information, visit rsol.org.

As the public opening of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League (RSOL) Designer House quickly approaches, Glavé & Holmes Architecture is thrilled to share some of the finishing touches in the room – the artwork. This week, our featured industry partners are two fine art suppliers, Fletcher/Copenhaver Fine Art and Glavé Kocen Gallery.

Fletcher/Copenhaver Fine Art
Fletcher/Copenhaver Fine Art exhibit in quality antiques shows and work privately with collectors and designers to offer well-documented oil paintings, watercolors & drawings by significant American and European artists. They specialize in 19th through 21st Century art, all beautifully framed to museum standards. These experts are members of the Antiques Council, a professional association of antique dealers that mandates the highest ethical and professional standards. Members are selected by their peers for the quality of their merchandise, their expertise, and integrity. They have had the honor of organizing two museum exhibits to display the work of Moss Soyer (1899-1974) and of contributing essays to the book A Treasury of American Art. More recently, they curated the first American museum exhibition of the French Artist Alix Aymé (1894-1989) at the Evergreen Museum and the Library of Johns Hopkins University.

Glavé Kocen Gallery
We are keeping it in the family with the Glavé Kocen Gallery. Jennifer Glavé, our founder’s niece, and BJ Kocen established the gallery in 2007 in the heart of Richmond, Virginia. The gallery has come a long way since its creation, as it currently boasts roughly 3,200 square feet of display space and houses the work of 30 exclusive artists. They have flourished in the art community and created a strong reputation based upon their commitment to both honesty and integrity with their artists and patrons. Some of the artists they feature include: Susan Morosky, James Del Grosso, Greg Osterhaus, Steven Walker, Rodger Bechtold, Steve Hedberg, Matt Lively, Mark Chatterley, Rob Browning, Sheep Jones and Ed Trask. The Glavé Kocen Gallery offers a variety of services to their clientele which include the following: Guidance for Private Collections, Corporate Collection Consulting, Delivery & Installation, Framing and Spatial Planning for a client’s home or office space. The G&HA team will use artwork by Susan Morosky to complete the feel of the room.

Industry Partner Spotlight: The World’s Oldest Art Form

Stark Carpet

With the public reveal of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League (RSOL) Designer House just around the corner, G&HA is excited to share with you another Industry Partner Spotlight! This week we are pleased to announce our collaboration with Stark Carpet to provide flooring in the master bedroom of the RSOL House. We are sure that they will create a beautifully woven carpet that will tie the different aspects in the room together and we cannot wait to share the final design in a months time – but for now, learn more about Stark Carpet and their craft below.

Stark Carpet
Stark Carpet, a family owned company, specializes in creating custom carpets, rugs, fabrics, wall coverings and furniture for their clients. Globally, Stark Carpet is the largest producer of woven carpet and has furnished many prestigious residences, including The White House. The key to success for this company has been their dedication to creating the best possible product for their clients; they aim to fabricate beautiful and unique carpets that are unrivaled in both design and quality. The G&HA design team will be using the Churchill Stone Grey from the Nairamat Tibetan Collection, pictured below. This hand-woven rug from Nepal is made from 100% pure Tibetan wool.

A Nairamat Rug is truly one of the world’s oldest art forms. Every step during the creation is completed with the delicate touch of the human hand. The methods and tools used by Stark are the same techniques used centuries ago. From the lanolin-rich hand carded, handspun Tibetan wool, to the pot-dying process, all materials are the finest nature has to offer. Each rug is woven on an upright loom using the Tibetan Loop Senneh knot, by which each knot is tied around two warp threads and then looped around a metal rod. After weaving is finished, the rug is cut from the loom, meticulously sheared and trimmed, given a final pure water wash and sun-dried to bring out the rich hues and variations that are the hallmark of every Stark Tibetan rug.

With less than two months until the public opening of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League (RSOL) Designer House, G&HA designers are busy putting the finishing touches on product selection. This week, we are excited to feature two Richmond area furnishings companies: McKinnon and Harris and Vangarde Woodworks. These local industry partners are recognized for their craftsmanship, and we can’t wait to integrate their pieces into the design for the master bedroom.

McKinnon and Harris
Founded in a generation characterized by mass production, McKinnon and Harris is devoted to crafting high performance furniture without sacrificing aesthetic or function. The design of each piece begins with the artisans’ own memories, families, and heirlooms in mind, instilling a sense of timelessness in the finished product. Their love for family has played an instrumental role in their design process and business culture, as they are committed to creating pieces that will not only endure the harshest of weather conditions, but will also become treasured family heirlooms for years to come. For this reason, each handcrafted piece is guaranteed for life as well as personally signed and dated by the artisan. McKinnon and Harris’ Maury Table, pictured below, is the perfect addition for a sweet Sunday morning breakfast in the bedroom.

Vangarde Woodworks
Holding a reputation for creating the highest quality architectural millwork, custom cabinetry, and custom furniture, Vangarde Woodworks produces pieces that truly are “tailored to fit the way you live”. The company strives to exceed client expectations by creating the best product possible with respect to both material and budget. Vangarde’s skilled craftsmen thrive on the complexity of unique custom projects and have the capability of accommodating a wide array of client needs with their state of the art manufacturing facility. Vangarde is a team of problem solvers who are equipped to create solutions for every client regardless of project scope. The video below shows a custom vanity, designed by Gary Inman and brought to life by Vangarde, that was done for one of our residential projects. We are certain they will create something equally as amazing for the master bedroom of the RSOL Designer House.

For our third Industry Partner Spotlight, we are focusing on some of the gorgeous fabrics that will be used in the master bedroom at the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League Designer House. G&HA is pleased to be working with Yves Delorme and F. Schumacher Fabrics to help give the room its cozy, luxurious feel.

F. Schumacher Fabrics
From the company’s start in 1998, F. Schumacher has been bringing elegance to homes and other interiors through their commitment to textile design and quality. They pride themselves on being the only supplier of ornamental textiles from the 19th century that is still privately owned by decedents of the founder. Their textile expertise is not stylistically limited – they produce beautifully crafted products in a variety of styles and designs. These exquisite textiles have been put to use in a myriad of esteemed residences, including The White House and The Chambers of the US Supreme Court. F. Schumacher’s extensive selection of fabrics enabled G&HA’s designers to find the perfect textiles to compliment the master bedroom’s overall aesthetic, such as the aquamarine window treatments. Inspired by Mary McDonald’s love of Chinoiserie, this finely woven linen print is derived from an antique Chinese painted silk mural panel.

Yves Delorme
What better to complete the look of a room than bed linens? G&HA’s designers chose to make use of Yves Delorme’s stunning Walton collection. The main section of the items is a pure white fabric, enclosed by a criss-cross “Venetian” inserted hemstitch, which is then followed by a generous flounce of either nacre or silver sateen cotton. The international company has been family owned for more than 150 years and is considered to be one of the most prestigious brands in France. They are renowned for their fashion prints, which are inspired solely by original artwork, and for their classic pieces that are considered by many to be timeless. Our team will also be using the Triomphe throw in “figue.” These linens are the perfect touch to any room and provide a sense of serenity.

We are less than three months away from the opening of the Designer House on September 15. This week’s Industry Partner Spotlight focuses on three of Glavé & Holmes’ favorite fine furniture companies. Read more about each partner’s passion for their craft below.

Kindel Furniture Company

Kindel Furniture Company has been producing beautiful, 100% American-made furniture for more than a century. Founded in 1901, the company has maintained a strong reputation for craftsmanship and authenticity. The skilled team of designers, engineers and artisans create “made to order” custom furniture that allows for adaptation of dimensions, wood species and functionality of their entire product line. Kindel built their brand around time-honored techniques that reflect a passion for the finest furniture. Their cozy “Chippendale Love Seat” fits seamlessly into our vision for the master bedroom.

Moore Councill

Moore Councill is a trusted and long-term partner in the home fashions industry. The Councill family is one of the most respected North Carolina furniture families, with a legacy of fine craftsmanship and impeccable service that spans a half-century. The Moore Councill line is fresh and innovative with exceptional attention to detail and a unique palette of materials including rosewood, ebony, mahogany, fine lacquer work, mother-of-pearl, caviar leather, verre églomisé, and metal leafing. The “Grantham Chest” designed by Gary Inman was inspired by the geometry of English gardens.

Niermann Weeks

With almost half of their business being custom-designed to meet the special needs of professional architect and designer clients, we knew we could trust Neirmann Weeks to provide beautifully crafted products for the room, such as their “Loire Canopy Bed.” The family owned business has been creating hand-made and finished products since 1978. Joe Niermann’s past experience with restoring antiques aided in the development of his own collection of antique-inspired furniture and lighting designs. Niermann Week’s unique designs take concepts from the past and adapt them for current lifestyles, aesthetically relating to both traditional and contemporary interiors and lifestyles.
